Plateau to strengthen Child Rights Law implementation

The Plateau State government has indicated readiness to strengthen the implementation of the Child’s Right Law which was gazetted by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in conjunction with the state’s ministry of Justice and Women Affairs.

The Child’s Rights Act which has 273 sections, 25 divisions/parts and 398 pages prohibits child marriage, child betroth, tattoos and skin marks on children, abduction, removal and transfer of children from lawful custody without the consent of their parents.

The law has long been in place in Plateau State but has essentially been unimplemented.

Speaking in Jos the state capital at the unveiling ceremony, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Jonathan Mawuyau, lamented lack of proper care of children by parents, stressing that domesticating the Plateau Child’s Rights Act would bring end cases of children’s maltreatment.

He said the child rights law which aimed to punish any parent maltreating his or her child did not give permission to children to terrorise their parents and other adults.

In his remark, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Adie Udie, said the government should uphold the global responsibilities of protecting the rights of the children.
